DAVE LOMBARDO's Advice To New Drummers: 'Take From Different Genres And Apply Them To What You Like'
January 4, 2015Mike C of WSOU (89.5 FM),the non-commercial college radio station broadcasting from the campus of Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, recently conducted an interview with former SLAYER and current PHILM drummer Dave Lombardo. You can now listen to the chat using the SoundCloud widget below.
Asked what advice he would give to up-and-coming drummers looking to establish their own sound and style, Dave said: "Practice what you're taught in school, if you're taking lessons, but don't be afraid to venture out and search for new music and music that is inspiring, and try to develop your own style. Take from different genres and apply them to what you like. Take your favorite genres and then create your own style. 'Cause then you have… It's almost like chemical properties of a certain substance. It's kind of the same idea: you take these several different elements, and they pass through one, and you have then a unique sound and style."
Lombardo was effectively fired from SLAYER after sitting out the band's Australian tour in February/March 2013 due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group. He has since been replaced by Paul Bostaph, who was previously SLAYER's drummer from 1992 until 2001 and recorded four albums with the band.
PHILM released its sophomore album, "Fire From The Evening Sun", on September 16, 2013 (one day earlier internationally) via UDR. The band's lineup is completed by guitarist/vocalist Gerry Paul Nestler (CIVIL DEFIANCE),and bassist Francisco "Pancho" Eduardo Tomaselli (WAR).
